Chapter 23 - Stepping Out

By the time Mateo turned two, I realized that surviving was not the same as living. I had spent two years wrapped in the protective cocoon of my parents' home, but I needed to build a future.
I enrolled in a local community center's evening classes to finish the accounting degree Diego had forced me to abandon. On my first day, I sat in the back row, my hands sweating, feeling incredibly out of place among the younger students.
During the break, a woman with bright red glasses and a warm smile sat in the empty desk next to mine.
"First day jitters?" she asked, offering a small paper cup of coffee from a thermos. "I’m Elena. I’m a social worker, just taking this class for some administrative credits."
"I'm Valeria," I replied, accepting the coffee gratefully. "And yes. It has been a very long time since I was in a classroom."
"Well, you showed up. That’s the hardest part," Elena smiled. She noticed the thin, faded white scars peeking out from the collar of my blouse. She didn’t stare, but her eyes softened with a deep, professional understanding. "I work with a lot of women who are starting over. It takes a lot of courage to step back into the world."
"It took a lot of pain to get here," I admitted, surprised by my own honesty. I usually hid my past, but there was something incredibly safe about Elena.

"Pain is a brutal teacher," Elena said gently. "But it can also be an incredible fuel. We run a support group at the community center on Thursday nights. Women who have survived domestic violence. No pressure, but if you ever want to talk to people who understand, the door is open."
I looked at the coffee cup in my hands, feeling a strange spark of hope. "Thank you, Elena. I think I might just take you up on that."
