Chapter 11 - The Unveiling of the Horror

Dr. Mendoza stared at the black fabric with deep confusion. It was glaringly obvious that this was not a standard, medically approved maternity support band. It was far too rigid, heavily reinforced, and wrapped with an oppressive tightness that defied medical logic.
"Good God, who strapped you into this thing so tightly?" Dr. Mendoza muttered, his professional calm slipping into visible irritation. He ran his gloved fingers along the top rigid edge of the girdle. "This is actively cutting off your circulation. I need to loosen this right now so I can use the Doppler to find the fetal heartbeat."
A shock of pure, terrifying adrenaline flooded my weakened veins.
No. No. No.
Drawing on reserves of strength I didn't know I possessed, I weakly raised my hand and grabbed the doctor’s wrist. My fingers felt like ice against his skin. I stared up at him with wide, frantic, pleading eyes.
"No..." I gasped, my voice barely a broken whisper. "Don't take it off... please..."
I knew exactly what would happen if he opened it. Everyone would see. They would see what Diego had done to me the night before with his leather belt because his shirt wasn't ironed. They would see the fresh, bleeding cuts. They would see the massive, horrifying black and purple hematomas covering my ribs. They would see the ugly, swollen yellow bruising around my navel where he had kicked me weeks ago.
"It's okay," Dr. Mendoza assured me softly, misunderstanding my terror. He thought I was just scared for my baby. "I'm only going to loosen it to check on your little one. Trust me."
Before I could find the breath to protest again, Dr. Mendoza gripped the main, heavy-duty velcro tab.
Riiiiiip.
The loud, tearing sound of the velcro ripping open seemed to silence the entire emergency room.
He pulled the front panels of the thick girdle apart, opening it wide like a dark book. Then, he gently lifted the thin, white cotton undershirt that separated the rigid corset from my bare skin.
I squeezed my eyes shut, utterly defeated. Hot, humiliating tears rolled down my temples into my hair. It was over. My horrific secret, my profound shame, was now fully exposed under the bright fluorescent lights for the highest medical authority in the hospital to see.
Dr. Mendoza froze.
He didn't move a muscle. He didn't blink.
This was a man who had delivered thousands of babies. A veteran doctor who had seen horrific car crashes, massive hemorrhages, and every medical emergency imaginable. Yet, he knelt there, completely petrified, suspended in time.
He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. I watched as every ounce of color instantly drained from his weathered face, leaving him as pale as the hospital sheets. His breathing stopped entirely.
His wide, horrified eyes scanned my destroyed abdomen, taking in the gruesome details. Then, very slowly, he raised his eyes to meet my tear-filled gaze. I saw something in his expression that broke my soul into a million pieces: he saw the absolute hell I had been living in.
What he saw beneath that girdle was not the smooth, round belly of a glowing expectant mother. He saw a brutalized battlefield. He saw the dark, almost black bruises. He saw the lacerations, the deep inflammation, the old, circular cigarette burns, and the dried blood. He saw the systematic torture of a monstrous husband, and the physical pressure that awful girdle had exerted to hide it all from the world.

The nurse kneeling beside him leaned over to look. She immediately clamped both hands over her mouth, letting out a muffled scream of horror as she stumbled backward, crashing into the reception counter.
Dr. Mendoza swallowed hard. His jaw began to tremble. The initial wave of profound shock rapidly morphed into a hot, blazing, and absolutely terrifying fury.
