Chapter 12 - Lockdown

Dr. Mendoza rose slowly to his feet. His imposing, broad-shouldered figure seemed to block out the harsh ceiling lights, casting a long shadow over me.
He turned his head slowly toward Doña Carmen. My mother-in-law had suddenly gone entirely mute. The arrogant sneer had vanished from her face, and she took a hesitant step backward, clearly unnerved by the terrifying shift in the medical team's demeanor.
Dr. Mendoza raised his arm, pointing a stiff, unyielding finger straight toward the main exit doors of the emergency room. He drew in a massive breath and released a roar that rattled the glass panes in the windows.
"LOCK THE DOORS TO THIS WARD RIGHT NOW!"
The command was so absolute, so fueled by righteous rage, that the security guard practically jumped out of his skin. The burly guard sprinted toward the double glass doors, shoved them shut, and loudly threw the heavy deadbolts into place.
"CALL THE POLICE! CALL THE PUBLIC PROSECUTOR! CALL EVERYONE!" the Chief of Obstetrics continued to shout, his face flushed with anger, his finger now aiming directly at my trembling mother-in-law. "AND DO NOT LET THAT WOMAN LEAVE THIS BUILDING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!"
Doña Carmen’s designer handbag slipped from her shoulder, dangling uselessly from her wrist. Panic finally set into her eyes as she realized the golden shield of her wealth and status was completely useless in this room.
"What is wrong with you, doctor?!" Doña Carmen stammered, her high-pitched voice cracking. "You cannot hold us hostage! I am Diego Villalobos's mother! You don't know who you are messing with! My daughter-in-law is crazy, she hurts herself..."
"Shut your mouth, you vile woman!" Dr. Mendoza roared, cutting her off completely.
He stepped toward her, his voice vibrating with disgust. "I have worked in this public hospital for thirty years. I have seen every tragedy imaginable. But I swear to you on my life, I have never seen such a barbaric atrocity committed against a pregnant woman. These marks are not from a fall. They are from a brutal, prolonged beating. And you brought her here, humiliated her, and struck her in my own ward."
The waiting room erupted into furious whispers. Women covered their mouths in horror; men glared at Doña Carmen with absolute disgust. She was entirely surrounded, trapped by the consequences of her own cruelty.
"Lupita, call the prosecutor's office directly," Dr. Mendoza ordered the head nurse, his voice dropping to a cold, professional steel. "Tell them we have an extreme Code Violet. Severe domestic violence and an imminent risk to a thirty-week fetus. I want agents here in five minutes."
"They are already on the line, Doctor," Nurse Lupita replied, glaring daggers at my mother-in-law.

While the chaos raged around the locked doors, I lay on the floor, feeling the edges of the world slipping away again. But Dr. Mendoza quickly knelt back down beside me, pulling a thermal blanket over my exposed, bruised torso.
"Look at me, Valeria," he said gently, his eyes filled with fierce protection. "You are safe now. I swear to you, no one is ever going to hurt you again."
