Chapter 17 - The Wall of Justice

From my bed, I could hear every word exchanged in the corridor clearly.

"Who the hell are you?" Diego demanded angrily. "Move aside, old man. I am taking my wife home."

Dr. Mendoza’s voice, when he finally spoke, was a low, terrifying rumble that carried the weight of absolute moral authority.

"I am Dr. Alejandro Mendoza, Chief of Obstetrics," he replied smoothly. "And you must be Diego Villalobos. The coward who confuses a leather belt with an argument."

The direct, humiliating insult completely derailed Diego. There was a brief silence, followed by the sound of Diego stepping aggressively forward.

"Watch your mouth, doctor," Diego threatened, his voice dropping into a deadly register. "You clearly have no idea who you are dealing with. I will have your medical license revoked and your career destroyed by tomorrow morning."

The corporate lawyer quickly stepped in, trying to smooth things over with legal jargon. "Doctor Mendoza, I am the legal representative for the Villalobos family. We understand public hospitals lack resources, leading to misunderstandings. My client's wife suffers from severe, untreated gestational psychosis causing self-harm. Here are the release forms signed by her legal husband."

"You can shove those forms," Dr. Mendoza replied, his voice dripping with absolute contempt. "In this hospital, we do not recognize the legal authority of an abuser over his victim. Especially when that 'authority' has been used to systematically torture a pregnant woman."

"That is a lie!" Diego roared, losing his polished executive mask completely. "She fell down the stairs! She made this all up to ruin me! Valeria! Get out here right now and stop playing the victim!"

Hearing him scream my name made me tremble violently.

But before Diego could push past the doctor, the heavy metal doors of the ward's elevator pinged open.
