Chapter 14 - Room 402

The steady, rhythmic dripping of the IV fluid marked the passing of time in Room 402. The harsh, chaotic atmosphere of the emergency room had been replaced by the quiet, sterile calm of the high-risk obstetrics floor.
I was lying in a mechanical hospital bed, the metal side rails raised high. For the first time in years, the bars didn't feel like a cage; they felt like the walls of an impenetrable fortress. To my left, a large monitor tracked my vital signs, but my eyes were fixed on the smaller fetal monitor beside my pillow, constantly broadcasting the rapid, beautiful thump-thump-thump of Mateo’s heart.
The heavy, black maternity girdle was gone from my body. It sat coiled on the bedside table like a dead, venomous snake. I felt a strange physical lightness in my abdomen, a freedom to breathe that I hadn't experienced in five months.
The heavy wooden door to my room opened slowly, without the terrifying, aggressive click that used to warn me Diego was home.
Dr. Mendoza walked in, looking exhausted but resolute. Right behind him was a woman in a sharp navy-blue pantsuit, wearing a lanyard with the official badge of the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office. She carried a thick black folder under her arm.
"Valeria, how is the pain?" Dr. Mendoza asked, checking my IV line.
"Manageable, Doctor," I rasped, my throat dry from crying. "Just hearing the baby is enough."
"Good," the doctor smiled gently. He turned to the woman beside him. "Valeria, this is Prosecutor Elena Ortiz from the Specialized Unit for Domestic Violence. She needs to take your official statement. I know you are exhausted, but time is critical. Your mother-in-law's lawyers are already trying to pull strings to get her out of holding."
Elena Ortiz stepped forward. She didn't look like a cold, bureaucratic lawyer. Her eyes held a deep, fierce empathy.
"Hello, Valeria," Elena said smoothly, pulling a digital tablet from her folder. "You are completely safe here. Dr. Mendoza has already provided me with your medical report and the forensic photographs of your injuries. What we saw is abhorrent. We are here to ensure that monster never comes near you again."
A familiar wave of fear washed over me. "I am scared, ma'am. Diego has so much money. His family knows judges and politicians. He always told me he would take the baby and throw me in an asylum if I ever spoke."
Elena pulled up a chair and sat right beside me, looking me dead in the eye.
"Wealth and connections can buy many things, Valeria," she said firmly. "But they cannot erase forensic medical evidence documented by the Chief of Obstetrics. Furthermore, your mother-in-law slapped you in front of twenty witnesses and high-definition security cameras. The Villalobos family is not untouchable. Today, their game ends."

I looked at Dr. Mendoza, who nodded encouragingly. I took a deep, painful breath, staring at the ceiling.
"Okay," I whispered. "I will tell you everything."
