Chapter 38 - The Five-Year Mark

The fifth anniversary of 'The White Line' shelter was a milestone celebrated by the entire city. We hosted a grand gala in a beautiful downtown ballroom to raise funds for our new legal defense initiative.

I wore a stunning, emerald-green evening gown. It was sleeveless, and the neckline was low enough that the faint, silvery lines of my scars were barely visible against my skin. I didn't try to hide them with makeup. They were a part of my story.

The ballroom was packed with donors, survivors, and local politicians.

During the cocktail hour, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see Dr. Mendoza, looking distinguished in a sharp tuxedo.

"Valeria," he smiled warmly, holding out his hands.

"Dr. Mendoza!" I gasped, pulling the man who had saved my life into a tight embrace. "I am so incredibly happy you came."

"I wouldn't have missed it for the world," he said, stepping back to look at me. His eyes were filled with awe. "The woman I met in the emergency room five years ago... she was fighting just to take a single breath. Look at you now. You are breathing life into hundreds of women."

"I only had the chance because you refused to look away," I told him, my voice thick with emotion. "You documented the truth. You gave me the weapon I needed to fight back."

"You fought the battle, Valeria," he insisted gently. "I am just incredibly proud to know you."

As I walked up to the stage later that night to give the keynote speech, I looked out at the sea of faces. I saw Elena, Dr. Mendoza, Hector, and my parents. I was surrounded by a fortress of good, decent people, and the monsters of my past were completely, utterly eradicated.
