Chapter 36 - Moving Out

With the success of the shelter and my secure salary as the foundation's director, the time had finally come for complete independence.

I bought a small, beautiful house in a quiet, leafy neighborhood on the south side of the city. It had a big backyard with a mango tree, a bright yellow kitchen, and, most importantly, heavy, secure locks that I alone held the keys to.

Moving day was a joyous, chaotic event. Elena, Carlos from security, and a few women from the shelter came to help us unload the moving truck.

Mateo, now an energetic four-year-old, ran through the empty rooms, his laughter echoing off the freshly painted walls.

"Mama! Look! This is my room!" Mateo yelled, pointing excitedly at a bedroom painted a soft, calming blue.

"It is, mi amor," I laughed, carrying a box of books into the room. "And we are going to put a massive bookshelf right there, and a big toy chest in the corner."

My father walked in, carrying a heavy wooden dining chair. He set it down, wiping the sweat from his forehead, looking around the house with immense pride.

"You did it, Valeria," he said softly, putting an arm around my shoulders. "You built a beautiful life for him."

"We did it, Papa," I corrected, leaning my head against his shoulder. "I couldn't have survived those first few years without you and Mama."

Later that evening, after the helpers had left and Mateo was asleep in his new bed, I walked through the quiet house. I stood in the center of the living room, listening to the absolute, peaceful silence. It wasn't the terrifying silence of obedience. It was the beautiful, sovereign silence of freedom. I owned this space. I owned my life.
