Chapter 24 - The Support Group

The following Thursday, I stood outside the door of Room 4B at the community center for a full ten minutes. My heart pounded a frantic rhythm. I had never spoken about Diego and the girdle to anyone other than the police, the judge, and my doctors.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open.

A circle of folding chairs was set up in the middle of the room. About ten women were seated, drinking tea and talking quietly. Elena looked up and beamed.

"Valeria, I am so glad you came," she said, standing up to guide me to an empty chair.

As the meeting started, women took turns sharing their stories. I listened to tales of financial control, emotional manipulation, and physical terror. Every story was different, yet the underlying current of fear was exactly the same.

When it was my turn, the room fell silent.

"My name is Valeria," I began, my voice shaking slightly. "My husband tried to kill me. But before he did that, he tried to erase me. He used a heavy corset, a girdle, to literally squeeze the breath out of my lungs, to make me small and obedient."

I looked around the circle. No one looked away. No one judged. I saw only fierce empathy.

"I thought I was going to die in that house," I continued, my voice growing stronger. "But I survived for my son. And now that I am free, I realize that the silence was the heaviest thing I ever wore."

A woman across from me, older and with kind eyes, nodded slowly. "The silence is how they keep us trapped. Breaking it is how we break them."

"I broke him," I said, a profound sense of empowerment washing over me. "He is in a cage, and I am here."

For the first time since my escape, I didn't just feel like a victim who had gotten lucky. I felt like a warrior.
