Chapter 6 - The Forgotten Procedure

Lily had not been an accident. She had come from our final frozen embryo, the last fragile hope of a long, exhausting IVF journey that Grant had practically abandoned halfway through.
Later that morning, while Lily was napping in her bassinet, I sat at the small kitchen island with my laptop, organizing my personal files. I opened my email to find a standard, automated message from our fertility clinic.
Subject: Annual Record Retention Notice.
I clicked it open, intending to forward it to Daniel for the divorce discovery files. The email contained a summary of our past procedures and medical history held on file. As I scrolled through the dates, my eyes caught a specific line item near the bottom of the page.
Patient: Grant Vale. Procedure: Bilateral Vasectomy. Date: October 14th.
I stared at the screen. The date was fourteen months ago.
Fourteen months ago, after our third failed IVF cycle, Grant had been furious. He had blamed my body. He had screamed that he was done being a "lab rat" and had secretly undergone a permanent vasectomy, informing me only after it was done. He had told me our marriage was over if I couldn't give him a child naturally, knowing full well the procedure made it impossible.
I did the math in my head. Celeste was twelve weeks pregnant. Grant’s vasectomy had been performed over a year prior.
A slow, creeping smile spread across my face.
Grant, in his blind, desperate arrogance to prove his masculinity and secure a son, had entirely forgotten his own medical history. Or perhaps, in his narcissism, he had convinced himself that his genetics were simply too powerful for modern surgery to contain.

He hadn't just betrayed me. He hadn't just abandoned his daughter. He had chosen to build his entire new life, his new legacy, on a lie that was mathematically and medically impossible.
He had chosen the one lie that could destroy everyone standing beside him.
