Chapter 22 - The First Cohort

The Lily Vale Fellowship was not a PR stunt; it was the beating heart of my new legacy. I wanted to ensure that brilliant young women never had to face the suffocating, patriarchal barriers that I had endured in my youth. We had received over five thousand applications from top-tier universities across the globe for the inaugural cohort. I personally insisted on sitting in on the final round of interviews.

It was a Tuesday afternoon when Sarah Jenkins walked into my office. She was a twenty-two-year-old biomedical engineering prodigy from MIT, wearing a slightly wrinkled blazer and clutching a massive leather portfolio. She looked nervous, her eyes darting around the opulent corner office before settling on me.

"Please, have a seat, Sarah," I offered warmly, gesturing to the plush armchair across from my desk. "I was incredibly impressed by your thesis on synthetic cellular regeneration."

Sarah sat down, practically vibrating with nervous energy. "Thank you, Mrs. Vale. I... I can't believe I'm actually here. Vale Medical has always been the gold standard, but frankly, until you took over, it had a reputation for being somewhat hostile to female researchers."

I didn't flinch at her honesty. I welcomed it. "You are entirely correct, Sarah. The previous administration was a boys' club that prioritized ego over talent. That culture has been permanently dismantled. I am looking for disruptors. I am looking for women who want to change the world."

Sarah opened her portfolio, pulling out complex schematics for a new type of biodegradable surgical stent. "My professors told me this was too ambitious for a graduate student. They told me to scale back and focus on incremental improvements to existing patents."

"Incremental improvements do not change the world," I replied, leaning forward and examining the blueprints. The math was brilliant. The concept was revolutionary. "If we fund this research, Sarah, you will have complete autonomy over your lab, backed by the full weight of Vale Medical's legal and manufacturing divisions."

Tears of absolute disbelief sprang to her eyes. "Are you serious? You would give me a lab?"

"I am giving you a platform," I smiled, seeing the exact fire in her eyes that I had cultivated in myself. "Welcome to the Lily Vale Fellowship, Sarah. Let's show your professors exactly what an ambitious woman can do."
