Chapter 21 - The New Vanguard

The morning after Lily took her first steps, I walked into the executive boardroom of Vale Medical Systems with a completely renewed sense of purpose. For decades, this room had been a shrine to Grant’s toxic ego and his father’s outdated, ruthless business philosophies. The heavy oak panels and dim lighting had always felt oppressive, designed to intimidate rather than inspire. Today, the heavy velvet drapes were pulled wide open, allowing the brilliant, harsh morning light to flood the space and expose every corner.
I sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, flanked by the newly appointed executive team. I had spent the last eight months methodically purging the rot from this company. The sycophants, the enablers, and the executives who had turned a blind eye to Grant’s massive embezzlement had all been handed their severances and escorted out by security. In their place sat brilliant, diverse, and fiercely loyal professionals who cared about medical innovation, not corporate politics.
Jonathan Hayes, my newly appointed Chief Operating Officer, handed me the quarterly financial summary. Jonathan was a stark contrast to Grant. He was quiet, exceptionally analytical, and possessed an unwavering moral compass. He had been instrumental in helping me navigate the chaotic fallout of Grant’s federal indictment.
"The markets have responded exceptionally well to the restructuring, Eleanor," Jonathan noted, adjusting his glasses. "Our stock has not only stabilized, but we are seeing a steady five percent growth this quarter. Investor confidence is higher now than it was during Grant's final two years."

"That is because we are finally selling actual medical advancements, not empty promises and fabricated ledgers," I said, my voice steady and commanding. I looked around the table, making eye contact with every single leader in the room. "We are no longer a company defined by the scandal of our former CEO. We are a biomedical powerhouse. But this is just the stabilization phase. Now, we expand. I want to double the R&D budget by the end of the fiscal year."
A few of the older board members shifted uncomfortably, but no one dared challenge me. They knew exactly what happened to the last people who underestimated my resolve. I was the Chairwoman, and Vale Medical was finally mine to mold.
