Chapter 16 - The Uninvited Guest

The grand ballroom of the Vale Grand Hotel was a nauseating display of stolen wealth.

It was overflowing with thousands of imported white roses, towering crystal candelabras, and a string quartet playing soft, classical music. Four hundred guests—politicians, socialites, and investors expecting to witness a dynasty secure its future—sat in gilded chairs.

Grant stood at the altar, wearing a bespoke white tuxedo, looking like a king surveying his kingdom. Beside him stood Celeste, radiant in a custom designer gown that perfectly highlighted her pregnant stomach. Vivian sat in the front row, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief, playing the role of the proud matriarch flawlessly.

At exactly eleven fifty-eight, the heavy, intricately carved mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

I stepped inside, holding Lily in my arms. Daniel walked one step behind me.

I didn't sneak in. I walked straight down the center of the white silk aisle runner. My heels clicked rhythmically against the marble floor, a sharp, echoing sound that cut through the music.

People turned. Gasps rippled through the crowd as they recognized the discarded ex-wife. The string quartet, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in the room's energy, faltered and stopped playing entirely.

Vivian saw me first. The fake, proud tears dried up instantly. Her smile vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute, terrified fury. She stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the floor.

“You weren’t invited!” Vivian snapped, her voice breaking the heavy silence of the ballroom.

I stopped halfway down the aisle. I looked at the woman who had mailed my daughter a bracelet calling her second place.

“I was invited into this family six years ago, Vivian,” I said, my voice echoing clearly off the vaulted ceilings. “Today, I’m returning exactly what it gave me.”
