Chapter 27 - Letters from the Abyss

The absolute destruction of Richard Sterling sent a shockwave through the corporate world. The message was clear: Eleanor Vale was not a figurehead, and Vale Medical Systems was an impenetrable fortress. The aggressive maneuvers against us completely ceased, allowing the company to thrive in an era of unprecedented peace and innovation.
But while my professional life was a soaring triumph, the past still tried to reach out from the dark.
It was a quiet Saturday morning. I was in my penthouse, sitting at the massive kitchen island, sipping a cup of Earl Grey tea. Lily was sitting in her highchair, happily smashing a handful of blueberries onto her tray, babbling in a language only she understood.
My personal assistant had dropped off the weekly sorted mail. At the bottom of the stack was a stark, white envelope stamped with the seal of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
I stared at it. The handwriting on the front was unmistakable. Grant.
It was the fifth letter he had sent in the last eight months. The first four had been intercepted by my legal team, but I had explicitly instructed them to forward this one to me. I needed to know if the sight of his handwriting still held any power over me.
I picked up the envelope. I didn't feel the paralyzing terror that used to define my marriage. I didn't feel the crushing weight of his manipulation. I felt absolutely nothing. The man in the federal penitentiary was a stranger, a pathetic ghost completely disconnected from my reality.
I didn't open it. I didn't care about his apologies, his manipulations, or his desperate attempts to maintain a psychological tether to my life.
I walked over to the modern gas fireplace in the center of the living room. I clicked the ignition, watching the bright blue and orange flames roar to life. Without a second of hesitation, I tossed the sealed envelope into the fire.
The paper curled, blackened, and turned to ash in seconds.
"Mama!" Lily babbled from the kitchen, slapping her sticky hands on the tray.

I turned my back on the fire and walked over to my beautiful, perfect daughter. I kissed the top of her head, wiping the blueberry juice from her cheek.
"I'm right here, my love," I smiled. The ghost was burned, and my home was perfectly safe.
