Chapter 23 - The Ghost in the Lobby

Despite the soaring success of Vale Medical, the ghosts of the past occasionally attempted to crawl out of the wreckage. I was walking through the grand marble lobby of the corporate headquarters on a rainy Thursday morning, flanked by my personal security detail, when a frail, frantic voice echoed across the atrium.
"Eleanor! Please! Eleanor, wait!"
I stopped, turning toward the security desk. A woman was struggling against the firm grip of two guards. It took me a full three seconds to recognize her. It was Vivian.
Grant's mother, the woman who had once tormented me in sprawling country clubs and pristine drawing rooms, looked entirely broken. Her designer clothes were gone, replaced by a cheap, ill-fitting raincoat. Her hair was unkempt, and the arrogant, elitist sneer that had permanently rested on her face was replaced by sheer, desperate panic.
"Let her speak," I commanded softly. The guards instantly released her but remained only a few inches away.
Vivian stumbled forward, practically falling to her knees. "Eleanor, thank God. They wouldn't let me up to your office. You have to help me. My landlord is evicting me. My pension was seized by the federal courts to pay Grant’s restitution. I have absolutely nothing."
I looked down at the woman who had once mocked my background, the woman who had actively conspired to let Grant replace me with Celeste to secure a "true heir." I felt absolutely zero sympathy. The ledger of my heart was completely balanced, and her account was irrevocably empty.
"You are trespassing, Vivian," I said, my voice as cold and hard as the marble floor beneath our feet.
"I am Lily’s grandmother!" she wept, reaching a shaking hand toward me. "You cannot leave family on the street! I will do anything. I will clean your floors. Please, just a small stipend. You are worth billions!"
"You lost the right to use the word 'family' the day you helped your son forge his vasectomy records to manipulate me," I replied, stepping back to avoid her touch. "You enabled a monster because you worshipped his money. Now, you are experiencing the reality of the world you built."

"You are cruel!" she hissed, a brief, pathetic flash of her old venom breaking through. "You are a cold, heartless bitch!"
"No, Vivian," I smiled perfectly. "I am just a mirror. Security, escort this woman off the premises. If she returns, have her arrested for criminal trespassing." I turned my back and walked to the executive elevator, leaving her screams echoing in the empty lobby.
