Chapter 6 - The Getaway Car

I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the cathedral and stepped out into the crisp, gray afternoon. Rain was falling in fine, silver sheets, washing the stone steps and cooling the hot, angry skin of my bruised cheek. I didn't care that the water was ruining my expensive hair or soaking the hem of my silk gown. I took a deep, shuddering breath, tasting the absolute freedom of the storm.
At the bottom of the steps, a black luxury sedan sat idling in the rain. It was a vehicle Adrian had never seen, driven by a man he did not know. Marcus, my personal driver and the head of my father's private security detail, immediately stepped out into the downpour. He opened the rear door for me, his eyes quickly scanning my face and zeroing in on the angry red welt blooming across my skin.
"Are you hurt, Ms. Ward?" Marcus asked, his deep voice tightening with barely concealed protective rage.
I slid into the plush leather seat of the car, wiping a drop of blood from my lip with the back of my hand. "Not enough to stop me, Marcus."

He firmly shut the door, sealing me inside the soundproof, bulletproof cabin, and quickly got behind the wheel. As the car pulled smoothly away from the curb, I looked down at my bridal bouquet. I dug my fingers deep into the center of the white roses, snapping the stems until I found the hidden, waterproof compartment. I pulled out a small, state-of-the-art digital recording device.
It had captured everything in crystal-clear audio: the priest's vows, the rustle of the contract, Adrian’s brutal demand, the sickening crack of the slap, Celeste’s cruel laughter, and the best man inadvertently admitting the papers had been illegally prepared beforehand. I connected the device to my phone and securely transmitted the encrypted file directly to my lead attorney.
