Chapter 10 - The Unfiled License

|
A profound, heavy silence fell over the phone line. I could practically hear the gears grinding in Adrian's head as the reality of my words began to sink in.
In his arrogant rush to secure my fortune, Adrian had made a fatal logistical error. He had explicitly instructed his best man, Greg, not to submit the signed marriage license to the state officiant until after I had signed the asset transfer document at the altar. He wanted the financial control locked down before making the marriage legally binding, ensuring I couldn't claim a standard marital split if things went wrong. He had created his own perfect, inescapable trap, and then he had handed me the key.
"The license is void," I continued, breaking the silence. "You have no legal right to me, and you have absolutely no legal right to my shares. You walk away with nothing."
"You planned this," Adrian breathed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, paranoid register. "You set me up from the beginning. You made me look like a fool on purpose."
May you like
"No, Adrian," I replied calmly. "I simply prepared for the very real possibility that you were exactly the monster that people warned me you were. You proved them right all on your own."
Without waiting for his response, I quietly ended the call, severing my final tie to the man who thought he could buy my submission with a fake smile and a heavy hand. I leaned back against the leather headrest, closing my eyes for a brief moment. The battle of the wedding was over, but the war for my company and my justice was just beginning. It was time to systematically dismantle the life he had built on my stolen name.
