Chapter 4 - The Slap

The silence at the altar stretched into something thick and suffocating. The priest hesitated, his hands hovering over his prayer book, clearly confused by the sudden deviation from the holy script. My bridesmaids shifted uncomfortably behind me, their silk dresses rustling in the quiet cathedral. I looked down at the silver pen, then up into Adrian's dark, demanding eyes. He had spent months carefully isolating me, calling my natural caution a sign of insecurity, framing my fierce independence as selfishness. Every subtle insult had been disguised as loving concern, all leading to this exact moment of ultimate submission.
"No," I said. My voice was quiet, but it carried absolute absolute certainty.
Adrian’s eyes widened in genuine shock, the color draining from his face before rushing back in a violent wave of red. "What did you say?" he hissed.
"I said no, Adrian. I am not signing away my company."
The disguise tore away completely. In a flash of unrestrained fury, Adrian raised his hand. His palm cracked across my face with the force of a gunshot. The physical impact snapped my head to the side, sending a shockwave of pain through my jaw. The cathedral went instantly, deathly silent. The sound of the slap echoed off the stone walls, followed immediately by a sharp, tiny clatter. The heavy pearl earring my father had given me tore from my lobe and struck the marble floor, rolling away into the profound stillness.

I tasted the sharp, metallic tang of blood pooling in the corner of my mouth. From the front pew, his mother, Celeste, did not gasp. She did not cover her mouth in horror. Instead, she gave a small, satisfied smile, pleased that the stray dog was finally being disciplined.
"Don’t embarrass me again," Adrian whispered, his teeth bared.
