While the symposium propelled our mission into the national spotlight, the remnants of my past occasionally reminded me of how far I had traveled. It was late afternoon when our corporate legal counsel forwarded a confidential notification from the federal correctional complex holding Adrian. He had exhausted every single appeal, petition, and legal loophole available under federal law. His sentence was absolute, and his petitions for early parole had been summarily denied due to ongoing compliance concerns and hidden asset investigations.
I sat at my desk, looking down at the legal summary. There was no rush of adrenaline, no sudden spike of anxiety—just the quiet weight of closure.
Marcus stepped into the office, reading my expression instantly. "I take it the final door has been firmly shut?"
"It has," I said quietly, spinning the tablet around so he could see the final docket entry. "The legal system has officially closed his chapter."
"Good," Marcus said, his voice devoid of sympathy for a man who deserved none. "Now we can focus entirely on the future."
