Chapter 3 - The Hidden Document

The priest’s voice echoed through the high, vaulted ceilings of the cathedral, speaking of love, honor, and eternal commitment. The words felt incredibly hollow, floating above us like empty promises. Adrian stood beside me, radiating a tense, impatient energy. I could feel his gaze burning into the side of my head, willing the ceremony to move faster. We exchanged our traditional vows, his voice ringing out loud and confident, designed to impress the two hundred guests watching our every move.
"I promise to honor and cherish you, for the rest of my life," Adrian declared smoothly.
As the priest asked for the rings, there was a sudden, unscripted shift in the proceedings. Adrian’s best man, a slick investment banker named Greg, stepped forward. Instead of just handing over the velvet ring box, Greg pulled a folded piece of thick, legal parchment from his inner jacket pocket. He smoothly slipped the document onto the altar, sliding a silver fountain pen beside it. It was placed deliberately beneath the marriage certificate, disguised perfectly from the view of the guests in the pews.
I looked down at the paper. It was a transfer of assets. A legally binding agreement signing over my twelve percent public shares in Halcyon Hotels directly to Adrian. The phrasing at the top was bold and unmistakable, granting him full executive control over my portfolio "for simplified marital management."

My heart pounded a slow, heavy rhythm in my chest. This was it. The ultimate test of my obedience. Adrian leaned in close, his breath brushing against my ear, the mask of the loving groom slipping completely to reveal the ruthlessness beneath.
"Sign it," he whispered, his voice a dark, velvet threat. "Sign it now, before we finish."
