Chapter 9 - SHADOWS AT THE GATE|

Three weeks passed.
Life at the Cain Estate transformed dramatically. The quiet, dreary atmosphere of the mansion was replaced by the light sound of Sophia's footsteps running down the marble halls and Zeus's heavy paws clicking behind her.
Rosa had stepped into her new role managing the estate's charitable foundation, using the vast resources of the Cain trust to help low-income families across Massachusetts.
However, in the dark underbelly of the city, news traveled fast.
Inside a dimly lit cigar lounge downtown, Victor Valenti—the ruthless leader of the rival Valenti Syndicate—slammed a glass onto a mahogany desk.
"Damon Cain took in a maid?" Victor sneered, looking at his chief lieutenant, a slick man named Lorenzo. "The iron boss of the North End suddenly has a family?"
"She's his late wife's half-sister," Lorenzo reported, dropping a surveillance folder onto the desk. "And she has a six-year-old kid. Cain cleared out his security team and reorganized his entire estate for them."
Victor flipped through the photos of Rosa and Sophia walking through the estate gardens. A cruel smile spread across his scarred face.
"For ten years, Cain was untouchable because he had nothing to lose," Victor mused, blowing a thick cloud of cigar smoke into the air. "No wife, no heir, no weak spot. But now... he has two."
"What are your orders, boss?" Lorenzo asked.
"Damon is hosting the annual Harbor Council Gala next weekend," Victor said, his eyes glittering with malice. "He'll bring the woman to establish her legitimacy. That's where we strike."

"At the gala?" Lorenzo hesitated. "The security will be airtight."
"Not against poison," Victor chuckled darkly. "A quick drop in a glass, a sudden tragic illness, and Damon Cain will be brought to his knees once again."
