Chapter 2 - THE SANCTUARY OF SHADOWS|

The rain rattled against the leaded glass windows of the grand entryway as Damon stood up slowly.
He brushed the water from his coat, his eyes lingering on Sophia’s small face.
"Bring her inside," Damon said, his tone low and even. "She’s soaked through."
"Mr. Cain, please," Rosa stammered, pulling her daughter behind her apron. "I can take her home. I know the rules."
"The lower valley roads are flooded, Rosa," Damon said smoothly. "You took three buses to get here. You won't make it a mile on foot."
He gestured toward a security guard standing in the courtyard shadows. "Lev. Bring Zeus into the lower parlor."
Lev blinked in sheer confusion. "Inside, Mr. Cain? On the rugs?"
"Did I ask for your opinion, Lev?" Damon replied, a faint edge returning to his voice. "Do as I say."
Within minutes, Rosa and Sophia were seated in the private breakfast parlor—a room Rosa had cleaned a hundred times but had never dared sit in. Sophia was wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket that smelled faintly of cedar and tobacco. A mug of hot chocolate sat before her, topped with fresh whipped cream.
Zeus lay comfortably at her feet, his heavy jaw resting on her small rubber boots.
"Drink," Damon commanded gently, leaning against the marble hearth with a glass of dark amber scotch. "It will keep the cold out."
"Mr. Cain," Rosa began, her hands tightly folded in her lap. "I apologize again. I broke my contract by bringing her."
"You brought your daughter because her school flooded," Damon said, taking a slow sip. "If you had left her alone in an empty apartment, I would have fired you for being reckless. You did what a mother must do."
Sophia took a sip of her drink, leaving a mustache of cream on her lip. "Where is your Mia Sophia?"
The parlor went dead silent.
Rosa gasped, ready to scold her daughter, but Damon held up a quiet hand.
"She went away," Damon said, his eyes softening as he stared out at the storm. "A very long time ago."

"Did she like dogs?" Sophia asked innocently.
"She loved them," Damon whispered. "Especially big ones."
