Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Sanctuary

|

The golden afternoon light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Alejandro’s Madrid penthouse, casting long, warm shadows across the polished hardwood floors. The sheer silence of the apartment was a stark contrast to the chaotic media circus he had just left behind at the High Court. It was a silence of peace, of safety, of a fortress that had finally sealed its gates against the monsters outside.

Alejandro handed his tailored suit jacket to Rosa, the elderly housekeeper who had been with his family since he was a boy. Her eyes, lined with years of quiet wisdom, softened as she looked at him.

"She has been waiting for you, Señor," Rosa whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "She ate a little of the soup, and she has not stopped drawing since the morning."

"Thank you, Rosa," Alejandro replied, his voice barely above a murmur. "For everything."

He walked softly down the wide corridor, his footsteps making no sound, until he reached the sunroom. Isabella sat at a small oak table, her tiny frame dwarfed by the oversized, soft sweater Rosa had wrapped her in. Her hands, still wrapped in white gauze from the blisters and cuts she had suffered under Carmen’s cruel labor demands, moved carefully across the paper.

Alejandro paused in the doorway, letting the cinematic beauty of the moment wash over him. He cleared his throat gently.

"Isabella?"

The little girl gasped, dropping the yellow colored pencil. She spun around, her large, fearful brown eyes searching his face for a sign.

"Papa?" she asked, her voice trembling like a fragile leaf in the wind.

Alejandro crossed the room in three long strides and dropped to his knees beside her chair. He didn't care about the sharp crease of his trousers. He carefully enveloped her in his arms, mindful of her healing hands.

"It is over, mi pequeña," Alejandro said, his voice breaking as he buried his face in her dark hair. "The judge signed the papers. They can never hurt you again. You are safe. You are home."

Isabella buried her face in his shoulder, her tiny fingers clutching the fabric of his shirt. For the first time in months, she did not cry out of fear. She cried out of relief.
