Chapter 11 - The Sound of Joy

|
The weekend arrived with a brilliant burst of spring warmth. Alejandro had ordered a massive delivery of professional art supplies: thick canvases, rich oil paints, delicate watercolors, and an array of fine brushes. He had transformed the penthouse’s spare guest room into a bright, sunlit art studio specifically for Isabella.
Rosa walked into the room carrying a tray of freshly baked churros and hot chocolate, smiling at the chaotic scene unfolding before her.
Alejandro, still wearing a pair of expensive slacks but having discarded his shirt for a simple white undershirt, was sitting on the floor with Isabella. Both of them were covered in varying shades of bright blue and yellow paint.
"Papa, you are doing it wrong!" Isabella exclaimed, her small hands holding a brush covered in crimson paint.
"I am an architect, Isabella, not a painter," Alejandro laughed, trying to wipe a smudge of blue paint off his nose, which only resulted in smearing it further across his cheek. "I deal in straight lines, not these... squiggles."
"They are not squiggles! They are clouds!" Isabella giggled.
Alejandro froze.
It was a small, high-pitched sound. It was fragile, hesitant, and incredibly brief. But it was a genuine, unadulterated giggle. It was the absolute first time he had heard his daughter laugh in over three years.
Rosa stopped in the doorway, pressing a hand to her mouth as tears immediately sprang to her eyes. She quietly set the tray down on a side table and backed out of the room, not wanting to break the magical spell.
Alejandro looked at Isabella, his heart swelling with an emotion so powerful it physically ached. He dipped his thumb into a pot of green paint and gently tapped the tip of Isabella’s nose.

"Well, if those are clouds, then this is a very green raindrop," Alejandro teased.
Isabella let out a loud, ringing burst of laughter, reaching for the yellow paint to retaliate. The dark, suffocating shadows of her past were finally beginning to crack under the brilliant, overwhelming light of her present.
