Chapter 21 - A Birthday of Light

The Madrid penthouse was completely transformed. Hundreds of bright, colorful balloons floated against the high ceiling, and massive banners reading "FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS ISABELLA" hung across the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Today was Isabella’s ninth birthday, and Alejandro had spared absolutely no expense to ensure it was a day of pure, unadulterated joy.
The living room was filled with children from her new, elite private school, laughing and running around while a professional magician performed elaborate tricks in the corner. Rosa bustled around the kitchen, carrying out trays of tiny sandwiches, sweet pastries, and an immense, three-tiered chocolate cake decorated with sugar flowers.
Alejandro stood near the balcony doors, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching his daughter. She was wearing a beautiful, flowing pink dress, a delicate paper crown perched on her dark hair. She was laughing loudly, her eyes bright and entirely devoid of the haunted, terrified look she had worn just a few months prior.
"She is thriving, Alejandro," Elena said, stepping up beside him with a warm smile.
"She is a miracle," Alejandro murmured, unable to take his eyes off her.
Isabella spotted him across the room and immediately abandoned the magician, sprinting across the polished floor. She threw her arms around his waist, hugging him tightly.
"Having fun, birthday girl?" Alejandro asked, kneeling down to match her height.
"It is the best birthday ever, Papa!" Isabella beamed. "Can we cut the cake now?"
"Of course," Alejandro laughed, taking her small hand.
As they gathered around the massive cake, the children sang loudly. Isabella closed her eyes tightly, her face a portrait of intense concentration, before blowing out all nine candles in a single, powerful breath.
"What did you wish for?" Elena asked playfully.

Isabella looked up at her father, a brilliant, secretive smile on her lips.
"I cannot tell," Isabella whispered. "But I already have it."
