Chapter 9 - Into the Arms of Safety

|

"Click."

The sharp, dry sound echoed loudly as the final electronic safety deadbolt was successfully overridden. The heavy, imposing mahogany door slowly, smoothly swung open. Without hesitating for a fraction of a second, the lead police officer pushed his way into the penthouse, closely followed by Marina’s frantic father. The moment he crossed the threshold, the older man’s desperate eyes frantically scoured the chaotic, disheveled living room. And then, he found her.

Marina was slumped heavily on the expensive hardwood floor, backed into a corner, her arms still locked fiercely around little Sofia. Her hair was a tangled, chaotic mess, and her skin was deathly pale, heavily contrasted by a bright red, swollen mark that was already blooming into a dark, ugly purple bruise across her left cheek. Completely ignoring the heavy police presence and Gustavo’s imposing figure, the father sprinted across the room like a guided missile.

"Marina! Oh, dear God, my sweet girl!"

He dropped roughly to his knees on the floor, throwing his trembling arms wide to completely engulf both Marina and his young granddaughter in a massive, desperately protective embrace. His arms were incredibly sturdy and wonderfully warm, shielding their exhausted, shivering bodies from the terror that had consumed them. Marina buried her bruised face deep into the crook of her father’s neck and finally let out a loud, gut-wrenching sob. Every ounce of strength, every barrier of defensive armor she had forced herself to wear over the past several hours shattered completely, melting away in the absolute safest place left in the world.

On the opposite side of the sprawling living room, Gustavo rapidly adjusted his demeanor. He raised both hands to chest height, adopting a mask of bewildered innocence and deep confusion.

"Officers, please, this is a massive, terrible misunderstanding! My wife slipped and fell on the marble. She is currently pregnant and her hormones have made her highly unstable. I was simply trying to assist her back to her feet when my father-in-law completely overreacted to the noise..."

He smoothly, effortlessly spun a flawless, highly practiced lie, his tone dripping with sincere concern and pathetic victimhood. His sheer, sociopathic audacity sent a collective shiver down the spines of the officers listening. But Gustavo had made one fatal miscalculation: he had entirely forgotten the most critical witness in the room.
