Chapter 1 - The Banging on the Door

|

The deafening sound of heavy fists slamming against the thick mahogany door echoed through the luxurious penthouse, vibrating like a desperate heartbeat against the silent walls. On the other side of that imposing wooden barrier stood Marina’s father, his voice hoarse and raw with a terrifying mixture of panic and unbridled fury. He did not stop calling her name, each syllable a desperate attempt to shatter the impenetrable wall of silence his daughter had been forced to endure for years. Inside the expansive living room, the atmosphere thickened into something suffocating and incredibly heavy. Gustavo, a man who had always projected an aura of absolute authority and ruthless control to the outside world, froze in his tracks. He was caught completely off guard. The cruel fingers that were brutally digging into Marina’s fragile arm loosened for a few fleeting seconds. His eyes widened, darting wildly around the room like a trapped predator suddenly realizing it had walked blindly into a snare.

However, his deeply ingrained instincts for violence and dominance quickly surged back to the surface. He clenched his jaw so hard that the veins stood out prominently on his neck, and a familiar, dangerous glint returned to his dark eyes.

"Stay exactly where you are!"

Gustavo growled deep in his throat, desperately trying to keep his voice from carrying out into the hallway. He lunged forward, raising his hand with the clear, malicious intention of ripping little Sofia from her mother’s protective embrace. But Marina was no longer the submissive, broken woman she had been just yesterday. The moment she registered his violent intent, she violently twisted her body, using her own slender back as a physical shield to cover her trembling six-year-old daughter. At the same time, she wrapped her arms fiercely around her heavily pregnant belly.

"Don't you dare touch her!"

Marina hissed, her eyes locking onto her abuser with a sharp, cutting defiance. Her heart pounded erratically against her ribs, but it was no longer fueled by paralyzing fear. It was fueled by pure, unfiltered maternal instinct and a desperate will to survive. Outside, her father continued to pound relentlessly on the door. That sound injected her with an invisible, surging strength. It was the undeniable proof that she was no longer isolated. The expensive soundproofing of the apartment could not block the fierce love of a father fighting to save his child. For the first time in years, Marina felt a blinding ray of hope piercing through the suffocating darkness of her personal hell.
