Chapter 7 - No More Silence

|

Marina stared directly into the eyes of the man currently kneeling pathetically on the expensive hardwood floor. Her eyes now radiated a strange, profound calmness and an unyielding resolve—a deep, quiet strength that Gustavo had never once witnessed during their entire marriage. It was not the defeated calmness of a woman who had given up, but the eerie, powerful stillness of a deep ocean right before a massive hurricane, the absolute clarity of a person who had survived the absolute limits of human suffering.

"Do you honestly think I still believe a single word you say, Gustavo?"

She finally spoke, her voice remarkably even, neither shouting nor whispering, but carrying a chilling, icy weight that cut through the room.

"This is far from the first time you have beaten me. This is simply the very first time that someone was standing close enough to the door to actually hear what you do to me in the dark."

Gustavo bit his lower lip, his gaze dropping in frantic confusion. "Marina, you don't understand what is happening. You will completely destroy this entire family if you let those police officers walk through that door. Sofia's future, our public reputation, my business..."

"Reputation?" Marina scoffed, a bitter, painful smirk pulling at the corner of her bruised mouth. "I have spent years meticulously hiding my black eyes and purple bruises under thick layers of expensive foundation. I have invented countless, pathetic excuses: I fell down the marble stairs, I walked into the edge of the kitchen island... I stayed completely silent and endured your sickening torture solely because of the paralyzing, suffocating fear that you would use your vast wealth and your powerful connections to rip Sofia away from me."

She tightened her protective embrace around her daughter, resting her chin softly on the little girl's trembling head, feeling the rapid, frightened heartbeat pressing against her own chest.

"You say I am going to destroy this family? You are completely wrong, Gustavo. This family was destroyed a long time ago. It was violently crushed every single time you consciously chose your fists over love. A family is not a place where people are forced to live in constant, agonizing terror."

Her words drove like sharp, undeniable daggers into his fragile, fabricated ego, delivering the harsh, undeniable truth that his reign of psychological terror had officially, permanently ended.
