Chapter 2 - The Trapped Predator

|
"Marina! Open this door right now! I have already called the police and the building security!"
The voice of her father booming from the hallway felt like a death sentence to Gustavo. The explicit threat of law enforcement and security guards acted like a bucket of ice water poured directly over his blazing rage. Gustavo took a sudden, staggering step backward, the pure aggression on his face rapidly melting into a portrait of absolute, unadulterated panic. He began to breathe heavily, his chest heaving as his eyes frantically scanned the massive, elegantly furnished living room. He took long, desperate strides toward the balcony, hopelessly looking for an exit.
"Damn it!"
He cursed violently under his breath, yanking at the glass doors. But every single exit to the balcony had been securely locked from the inside, controlled by the very smart-home security system he had personally installed to keep his wife imprisoned. Realizing the balcony was useless, he spun around and sprinted toward the private elevator that opened directly into the penthouse. His hands slammed frantically against the call button, hitting the illuminated panel over and over again. It was completely useless. The private elevator had already been disabled; it could only be overridden and activated by the central control system down at the ground-floor reception desk.

"Open! Open this damn elevator!"
Gustavo muttered, cold sweat beading heavily on his forehead. The bitter, ironic truth crashed down upon him: the expensive, state-of-the-art security grid he had used to isolate and terrorize Marina had now become his very own inescapable cage. Marina pulled Sofia closer, shrinking into a safe corner near the large velvet sofa, quietly observing her husband's frantic movements. She noticed a distinct, profound shift in his demeanor. The cold-blooded predator, the man who had always believed he held the power of life and death within these walls, was now displaying the pathetic, frantic terror of a cornered beast. There was no escape route, and no amount of wealth or corporate power could cover up his crimes in this exact moment. The sheer absurdity of Gustavo’s panic filled Marina with a profound sense of disgust. He was not the powerful, untouchable god he pretended to be; he was nothing more than a miserable coward who hid behind brutality to subjugate those weaker than him.
