Chapter 10 - The Truth Spoken Aloud

|

Gustavo’s brazen, fabricated lie had barely left his lips when it was sharply interrupted by a trembling, high-pitched, yet incredibly articulate voice. Little Sofia, safely tucked within the warm cocoon of her grandfather’s arms, turned her head around. Her red, tear-filled eyes widened as she stared directly at the terrible man who was supposed to protect her. The brave six-year-old extended her tiny arm, pointing a small, accusatory index finger straight at Gustavo’s face.

"He is lying! Daddy is a liar!"

Sofia hiccupped through her residual sobs, forcing herself to speak as loudly as her small lungs would allow.

"Daddy slapped Mommy! He pushed Mommy down on the hard floor! I saw everything, he hit my Mommy really, really hard!"

The explicit, undeniable testimony of the young child acted like a sharp executioner's blade, instantly severing any remaining thread of Gustavo’s pathetic defense. No one in that room could possibly doubt the sheer, traumatized honesty radiating from the little girl's panicked eyes and fragile voice. Two police officers immediately stepped forward, creating an impenetrable physical barrier between the wealthy businessman and the huddled family in the corner.

An officer clicked on a small tactical flashlight, shining the beam directly onto Marina’s battered face. The distinct, angry red impressions of large, thick fingers were clearly branded into her pale skin, and a thin, dark line of blood had begun to dry at the corner of her split lip. It was irrefutable, physical evidence. The officer then scanned the surrounding area: a shattered crystal vase lay in pieces on the rug, the heavy designer sofa had been violently shoved out of place, and various decorative items were scattered wildly across the floor. Everything painted a grim, textbook picture of a severe domestic violence incident.

"Mr. Gustavo, you will stand exactly where you are and you will not make any attempt to approach the victim," the commanding officer barked severely, pointing firmly to the far side of the room. "We are documenting this crime scene and you are being detained for further questioning. The paramedics are coming up the elevator right now."

Gustavo bit his lip violently, his face turning an ugly, ashen gray. He finally realized that, with the police physically present and his own daughter providing damning testimony, his flawless, curated mask of a respectable, successful husband had been completely and irrevocably destroyed.
