Chapter 8 - The Locksmith's Click

|

The frantic, wailing sirens of approaching police cruisers echoed up from the busy city streets below, easily piercing through the expensive soundproof glass of the penthouse windows. Out in the brightly lit hallway, the atmosphere was chaotic and urgent. Marina’s father, his face drenched in a heavy mixture of cold sweat and tears, hastily explained the entire, horrific situation to the newly arrived police officers. He frantically recounted the agonizing screams for help from his daughter, the terrified crying of his granddaughter, and the aggressive, stubborn refusal of his son-in-law to open the door.

"My daughter is heavily pregnant, officers! She is injured in there! Please, you have to hurry!"

The older man pleaded desperately, his hands clasped together so tightly that his knuckles had turned stark white. The lead police officer quickly verified the apartment's legal ownership status with the building management. Once Marina’s legal authorization was formally confirmed, and the immediate, life-threatening nature of the emergency was established, the commanding officer gave a sharp nod to the licensed locksmith standing by.

"Execute the breach. Try to manipulate the lock without compromising the structural integrity of the frame, just in case there is a physical struggle happening near the entryway," the officer commanded, his hand resting securely on the grip of his service weapon, fully prepared to respond to a violently escalating scenario.

The sharp, metallic clicking of precision tools engaging the complex electronic lock resonated loudly through the wood. To Gustavo, that specific mechanical sound was like the rhythmic ticking of a time bomb, signaling the absolute, catastrophic destruction of the flawless, respectable facade he had spent decades carefully constructing. To Marina, however, it was the most beautiful, melodic symphony she had ever heard in her entire life; it was the undeniable sound of incoming freedom. Her father stood pressed tightly against the corridor wall, his chest heaving, his eyes entirely fixated on the brass door handle. He mentally counted every agonizing second, praying to whatever god would listen that the door would swing open in time for him to drag his little girl out of that living hell.
