Chapter 3 - The Voice Through the Wood

|
Gustavo’s visible terror ignited a spark of profound courage within Marina—a courage she thought had been extinguished years ago. She took a deep, grounding breath, feeling her lungs expand with a newfound resolve, and made the conscious decision to completely shatter the silence that had kept her bound for so long. Tears streamed freely down her bruised and swollen cheeks, but when she opened her mouth, her voice carried a piercing, undeniable power.
"Dad! Dad, help me! I'm hurt! He just hit me!"
Marina’s desperate scream echoed violently throughout the spacious room, tearing through the suffocating atmosphere and penetrating the thick wooden door. It was not merely a cry for help; it was a fierce, definitive accusation, a profound liberation for a soul that had been trampled upon for far too long. She no longer cared about the menacing, wide-eyed glare Gustavo was shooting in her direction. He stood completely frozen in the center of the room, his face draining of all color, utterly unable to comprehend that the wife who had always bowed her head in submission was now daring to fight back so loudly.
Out in the hallway, the relentless pounding on the door abruptly ceased. There was a fraction of a second of absolute, terrifying silence. It was not the silence of surrender, but the heavy, pressurized quiet that immediately precedes a massive explosion. And then, a volcanic eruption of paternal fury shook the very walls.

"Get your hands off my daughter, you piece of garbage! Marina, step away from the door! I swear to God, no one is ever going to abandon you again!"
Her father’s voice roared with a ferocity that made the floorboards vibrate. His fierce promise wrapped around Marina like an invisible, impenetrable shield. It compensated for all the agonizing, lonely nights she had spent crying silently in the dark, wondering if anyone in the world truly cared whether she lived or died. Marina buried her face into Sofia’s soft hair, the violent sobs tearing through her chest no longer born of absolute despair, but of the overwhelming, dizzying relief of salvation. She knew, with absolute certainty, that this nightmare was finally coming to an end.
