Chapter 6 - The Hollow Apology

|
The heavy door remained firmly shut, acting as the final, desperate barrier between the light of justice and the darkness of abuse. While waiting for the authorized locksmith and the police forces to arrive and execute a legal breach, the atmosphere inside the sprawling apartment settled into a suffocating, terrifying stillness. Realizing that brute force and verbal intimidation could no longer alter his imminent downfall, Gustavo rapidly shifted his entire strategy. He understood that his grand, public performance had completely failed outside those walls, so he attempted to act out one final, desperate scene for his captive audience of one.
He slowly sank to his knees, dropping to the floor right beside the corner where Marina was tightly clutching Sofia. His facial features suddenly twisted into a mask of profound, agonizing regret and sorrow. He reached a hand out, attempting to gently caress her bruised cheek, but she violently flinched away from his touch.

"Marina... I am so sorry. I am so incredibly sorry," he whispered, his voice adopting a pleading, choked-up cadence. "I lost control of myself. The stress from the corporate acquisitions has been driving me insane. I swear to you, I swear on my life, this is the very last time. I will change, I will attend anger management therapy. We can start over, for Sofia's sake, for the sake of the beautiful baby you are carrying. Please, I am begging you, do not report me to the police."
Marina listened to the sweet, honeyed words pouring from his mouth, but her heart remained completely, coldly unmoved. If this had been the Marina of three years ago, she might have wavered. She might have desperately wanted to believe that love could somehow exorcise the monster living inside of him. She had previously believed dozens of identical, tearful apologies, which were always followed by expensive floral arrangements and lavish diamond jewelry after every brutal beating. But today, the heavy curtain of deception had permanently fallen. His apology now sounded utterly hollow, deeply artificial, and dripping with selfish calculation. He wasn't remorseful for shattering her body and her spirit; he was only remorseful because, this time, the world was about to catch him.
