Chapter 8 - The Interrogation Begins

|

Mia stepped quickly to the side of the bed and took the folded piece of glossy paper from Sofia’s shaking hand. She opened it cautiously, keeping one eye fixed firmly on Vanessa.

As Mia looked down at the image, her stomach dropped straight into her shoes.

The photograph was grainy, likely taken from a distance or printed from a corrupted security file, but the subjects were unmistakable. It showed Vanessa Bellini standing outside the mansion’s wrought-iron rear gate in the dead of night. She was standing extremely close to a tall, broad-shouldered man wearing a dark leather jacket.

It was a man Luca Moretti had believed dead for nearly three years. His name was Dante Rossi, a former syndicate enforcer who had supposedly perished in a warehouse fire after betraying the Moretti family.

Mia flipped the photograph over. Written across the back, in Sofia’s shaky, uneven handwriting, were six damning words:

He caused the accident. She knew.

Mia looked up from the photograph, her eyes wide with horror as the truth finally clicked into place. Sofia’s paralyzing car crash wasn't an accident caused by icy roads. It was a coordinated, deliberate hit. And the woman who was about to marry into the family had orchestrated the entire thing.

Vanessa saw the look of realization wash over Mia’s face. The beautiful fiancée was no longer pretending to smile. Her expression twisted into a mask of pure, cornered desperation. She lunged forward, her manicured hands reaching out to snatch the photograph from Mia’s grasp.

Before her fingers could even graze the paper, brilliant, blinding headlights swept violently across the bedroom windows, casting long, frantic shadows across the walls.

The screech of heavy tires tearing across the gravel driveway echoed through the quiet estate. Three black, armored SUVs were racing through the mansion’s front gates, ignoring the security checkpoints entirely.

Luca Moretti had come home.
