Chapter 14 - The Hidden Burner Phone

“He won't know she’s been caught,” Sofia pointed out from the bed, her voice growing stronger now that the immediate threat was removed. “She must have had a way of contacting him without using the house phones or her regular cell phone. You monitor all of those.”
Luca nodded, impressed by his sister’s sharp deduction. “She’s sloppy, but she’s not stupid. She has a burner phone hidden somewhere in this house.”
Mia immediately stepped forward. “I clean her suite every morning, Mr. Moretti. I know every inch of that room. If she’s hiding something, I can find it.”
“Go,” Luca ordered. “Take two of my men with you just in case she left any surprises. Tear the room apart until you find it.”
Mia hurried down the long, opulent corridor toward Vanessa’s master suite. The massive bedroom smelled strongly of expensive perfume and deceit. The two enforcers stood guard at the door while Mia went to work.
She didn't bother checking the obvious places—the jewelry boxes, the dresser drawers, or beneath the mattress. Vanessa was vain, but she was calculating. Mia walked directly into the massive walk-in closet, lined with thousands of dollars’ worth of designer shoes and handbags.
Mia dropped to her knees, running her hands along the plush carpeting beneath the lowest shoe rack. She pressed against the custom wooden paneling along the baseboard. About three feet in, she felt a slight give in the wood.
Using her fingernails, Mia pried the loose piece of decorative trim away from the wall.

Tucked inside a small, hollowed-out cavity in the drywall was a cheap, prepaid black cell phone.
Mia pulled it out, a rush of triumphant adrenaline surging through her veins. She didn't bother replacing the trim. She sprinted back down the hallway, clutching the device that would bring the entire conspiracy crashing down.
