Chapter 20 - The Unfinished Business

The second suppressed shot echoed briefly before the warehouse descended into absolute, heavy silence.
Luca stared down at the lifeless body of Dante Rossi for a long, agonizing moment. The ghost was finally buried. The man who had caused his sister so much pain would never hurt anyone again.
Luca lowered his weapon and turned his back on the corpse. “Burn the building down,” he ordered his lieutenants below. “Make sure nothing is left.”
By the time the sun began to peek over the harbor, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange, Luca’s armored SUV pulled back through the heavily guarded gates of the Moretti estate.
He walked through the quiet mansion, straight up the grand staircase to Sofia’s wing. The heavily armed guards nodded respectfully as he passed.
Luca pushed the bedroom door open. Sofia was sleeping soundly, peacefully, for the first time in six months. Mia was sitting in a chair near the window, watching over her like a silent guardian.
Mia stood up as he entered, seeing the exhaustion etched into his handsome face. “Is it over?” she whispered.
“Dante is dead. Vanessa will spend the rest of her life in the basement vault,” Luca replied softly, walking over to pour a glass of water. “You and my sister are safe.”
He took a drink, letting the cool water soothe his dry throat. It felt like absolute victory.
But as Luca set the glass down on the bedside table, his eyes drifted to the burner phone he had left behind hours earlier. The screen was illuminated.
A new, unread text message had just arrived on Vanessa’s phone.
Luca picked it up, his brow furrowing as he opened the encrypted application.
The message was from an unknown, blocked international number.

“Dante was careless. The real board is set. See you soon, Luca.”
Luca stared at the glowing screen, his blood running completely cold. The war wasn't over. The true monster was just waking up.
