Chapter 6 - Headlights in the Dark

Mia said absolutely nothing. She stood her ground like a stone pillar, refusing to break eye contact with the woman who was mere moments away from committing murder.

Vanessa took one aggressive, threatening step toward her, the heavy silk of her red gown rustling loudly in the quiet bedroom.

“Mia,” Vanessa warned. Her voice was no longer sweet or dripping with fake aristocratic charm. It was harsh, grating, and desperate. “I asked you a question. Who did you call?”

Before Mia could even open her mouth to reply, a deep, resonant male voice suddenly came through the phone’s speaker, loud and clear in the tense silence of the room.

“Me.”

Vanessa completely froze. The color drained from her face so fast she looked like a wax statue.

Mia slowly lifted her hand from behind her apron, revealing the glowing screen of the cell phone. The call duration timer was ticking upward. Luca Moretti was still on the line, and he had heard every single word.

Vanessa’s face went ghastly pale, her eyes wide with undisguised terror. “Luca…”

“Put the bottle on the table,” Luca’s voice commanded through the speaker. It was terrifyingly calm, devoid of any yelling or rage, which only made it infinitely more intimidating.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her mind racing as she immediately softened her voice, slipping desperately back into the role of the caring, devoted fiancée. “Luca, darling, you don’t understand what’s happening here.”

“Put it down.”

“She was having another episode,” Vanessa lied smoothly, forcing a nervous, delicate laugh. “Her nerves were acting up again. I was only trying to help her calm down.”

From the bed, Sofia shook her head frantically from side to side, her hands gripping the edge of the mattress. Luca heard the rustle of the heavy blankets through the phone’s sensitive microphone.

Then, summoning every ounce of strength she possessed, Sofia forced out four trembling, devastating words.

“She… changed… my medicine.”
