Chapter 17 - The Abandoned Warehouse

|

The old shipyard at Pier 4 was a desolate, rusting graveyard of forgotten maritime industry. Towering metal cranes loomed in the fog like skeletal giants, and the smell of saltwater and decaying fish hung heavily in the freezing night air.

Luca’s convoy cut their headlights two blocks away. The five armored SUVs rolled silently into the shadows of an abandoned shipping container yard.

Over two dozen heavily armed syndicate enforcers poured out of the vehicles, their movements synchronized and completely silent. They were ghosts in the dark, communicating only through precise hand signals.

Luca stood at the front of the pack, holding a suppressed tactical submachine gun. He wore a long black overcoat, the collar turned up against the biting wind, his eyes fixed on the massive, corrugated metal warehouse at the end of the pier. A single, dim yellow light burned through a dirty window on the second floor.

He gestured to his two top lieutenants. “Surround the perimeter,” Luca whispered into his radio earpiece. “Nobody gets out of that building alive. If you see a shadow move, put a bullet in it.”

“Understood, Boss,” the men replied in unison, fanning out into the darkness to choke off all possible escape routes.

Luca didn't wait for his men to clear the front. He walked directly up the rusted metal ramp toward the heavy loading dock doors. He knew Dante was inside, likely drinking expensive scotch, anticipating the arrival of a murderous bride.

Luca reached out with his gloved hand and tested the heavy iron handle of the warehouse door. It was unlocked. Dante was so arrogant, so confident in his grand betrayal, that he hadn't even bothered to set a lookout.

Luca pushed the door open, stepping quietly into the pitch-black cavern of the warehouse, ready to confront a ghost.
