Chapter 3 - The Call to the Boss

Vanessa’s expression hardened into a mask of pure malice. “No,” she sneered, leaning her weight against the mattress. “You tried to tell him. But you were highly medicated. You were recovering from a traumatic brain injury. And every single time you opened your mouth, I was there to remind him how confused and broken his poor little sister was. And every time, he believed me.”
Sofia’s breathing became shallow, her chest heaving as she struggled against the grip on her jaw. “My brother will find out,” she gasped out. “He will kill you.”
For the very first time that night, Vanessa’s cruel smile disappeared. A dark, dangerous shadow crossed her face. “Your brother sees exactly what I want him to see. And by tomorrow morning, he’s going to see that his tragic, crippled sister finally succumbed to a massive stroke in her sleep.”
Out in the hallway, Mia pressed the call button. She didn't hesitate. She didn't second-guess herself.
Across the city, in a dimly lit, smoke-filled warehouse overlooking the freezing waters of the harbor, Luca Moretti’s personal cell phone began vibrating on a polished black conference table.
Seven dangerous, heavily armed men immediately stopped talking. The tension in the room was palpable, but nobody dared to breathe while the boss’s phone buzzed. Luca looked down at the glowing screen. The caller ID flashed in stark white letters: MIA — HOUSE STAFF.
Mia had never called him directly. Not once in the two years she had worked at the estate. She communicated strictly through the head housekeeper or the estate manager. For her to bypass the chain of command at past midnight meant only one thing: disaster.
Luca held up one hand, silencing the room completely, and answered the phone.
“Mia?” he said, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble.

Her terrified whisper came through the speaker, shaking with unshed tears. “Mr. Moretti… you need to come home.”
Luca slowly straightened his posture, the dangerous mafia boss instantly shifting into absolute focus. “What happened?”
