Chapter 12 - Analyzing the Poison

Mia stood quietly near the doorway, intending to slip out and give the siblings privacy, but Luca raised his hand, gesturing for her to stay.
Within twenty minutes, Dr. Evans, the family’s trusted private physician, arrived at the estate with a portable testing kit. He was a discreet, older man who had patched up countless bullet wounds and kept the family’s darkest secrets for decades.
Luca handed him the bagged brown medicine bottle. “Tell me exactly what she was trying to force down her throat.”
The doctor set up his equipment on the small desk in the corner of the bedroom. He extracted a few drops of the cloudy liquid from the bottle, mixing it with chemical reagents in a small vial. The liquid instantly turned a dark, murky purple.
Dr. Evans looked up, his face pale and deeply troubled.
“Mr. Moretti,” the doctor began, adjusting his glasses nervously. “This is not medication. It’s a highly concentrated, synthetic paralytic derivative. It’s entirely untraceable in a standard autopsy.”
Luca’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle ticked visibly in his cheek. “What would it have done to her?”
“Given Sofia’s already compromised neurological state,” Dr. Evans explained grimly, looking at the young woman on the bed with profound pity, “a dose this size would have induced massive respiratory failure within minutes. It would have looked exactly like a tragic, spontaneous stroke in her sleep. She would have simply stopped breathing.”
Mia felt a wave of nausea wash over her. If she had hesitated for even ten seconds in the hallway, Sofia would be dead right now.

Luca stared at the brown bottle, the horrifying reality settling over the room. Vanessa hadn't just been trying to silence Sofia; she had been executing a flawless, untraceable murder right under his roof.
“Thank you, Doctor,” Luca said coldly. “Leave us.”
