Chapter 2 - The Wrong Medicine

Sofia turned her face away desperately, her breathing ragged and panicked, but Vanessa’s grip was like iron. She caught Sofia’s chin, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the fragile skin of the younger woman’s jawline.
“Stop fighting me,” Vanessa commanded. Her voice wasn't loud, but it was incredibly low and cold, dripping with a venomous authority that made Mia’s blood run cold.
Sofia’s wide, terrified eyes filled with hot tears of panic. “That isn’t my medicine,” she whimpered, trying to push herself backward against the heavy mahogany headboard. “I know what my pills look like. That isn't them.”
Vanessa smiled. It was a chilling, empty expression that didn't reach her eyes. “You really should learn when to stay quiet, Sofia. It would make things so much easier for everyone.”
Standing in the shadows of the hallway, Mia’s face completely drained of color. Her mind raced. She was the one who had personally arranged Sofia’s nighttime medication earlier that evening. She had set the small, white plastic prescription bottle right beside the glowing bedside lamp. She could see it from where she stood, sitting completely untouched on the nightstand. The bottle in Vanessa’s hand was entirely different. It was dark amber glass, unlabeled, and filled with a strange, cloudy liquid.
Mia took a slow, silent step backward, her pulse pounding in her ears like a war drum. She immediately reached into the deep pocket of her apron and pulled out her cell phone. Her fingers trembled so violently she could barely unlock the screen.
Inside the room, completely unaware that she was being watched, Vanessa continued speaking to the helpless girl on the bed.

“You’ve been causing problems for me for months, Sofia,” Vanessa hissed, her flawless face contorting with ugly resentment. “Ever since you woke up in that hospital, you’ve been nothing but a burden and a thorn in my side.”
Sofia stared up at her, tears spilling over her eyelashes. “I told Luca what I saw.”
