Chapter 6 - The Fall

Primal, maternal instinct instantly overrode Valeria's panic.
As she fell through the air, she desperately twisted her torso, throwing her arms out to prevent her stomach from taking the brunt of the impact.
She slammed violently onto the carpeted marble steps.
Her lower back hit the hard edge of the stone with a sickening, agonizing thud. A scream of pure agony tore from her throat as she rolled uncontrollably down the remaining six steps.
Her elbow crashed fiercely against the wooden spindles of the banister, bruising the bone instantly.
She fought desperately to curl herself into a protective ball, wrapping both arms tightly around her swollen belly as the world spun dizzily around her in a blur of gold light and green silk.
