Chapter 14 - The Upward Gaze

Alejandro let out a shuddering, massive breath of relief, pressing his forehead against hers.

He looked up at the colossal, terrifying mountain of shattered glass and crushed steel resting on the middle landing.

The sheer horror of how close he had come to losing his entire family caused his hands to shake violently.

"Who did this?"

Alejandro roared, standing up and turning toward the crowd, his eyes blazing with a lethal, protective fury.

"How does a structural steel cable simply snap?"

Nobody in the grand hall answered. The guests simply stared at the wreckage in terrified silence.

Until a tiny, subtle movement caught Valeria’s eye.

Laying on the floor, looking upward through the settling dust, Valeria slowly traced her gaze past the ruined chandelier, past the broken ceiling plaster, and up to the second-floor interior balcony that overlooked the grand hall.

Her blood instantly ran freezing cold.
