Paramedics rushed into the grand hall minutes later, carrying a trauma stretcher and immediately surrounding Valeria.
As they carefully lifted her up, checking the baby's strong, steady heartbeat with a portable monitor, Valeria kept her eyes locked on Lucia.
The paramedics were bandaging the brave young maid's bleeding arms.
Valeria realized that night that the world was entirely unpredictable. The person she had momentarily believed to be her attacker was actually her ultimate savior.
And the true, lethal threat had never been behind her on the stairs. It had been watching her from above, cloaked in the illusion of family and wealth.
As Alejandro held Valeria’s hand, walking beside her stretcher out of the ruined mansion, he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
"We are never coming back to this house,"
