Chapter 9 - Vanessa's Choice

|

While we built our case, Vanessa Reed was dealing with the catastrophic fallout of her actions in the courtroom.

Initially, she had remained fiercely loyal to Marcus. During her police interrogation, she parroted his narrative perfectly: I had stepped into her path deliberately, my pregnancy made me clumsy, and the contact was purely accidental.

Her attorney, funded discreetly by a subsidiary of Hale Communities, argued vehemently for the assault charges to be dismissed.

But Vanessa’s loyalty was a fragile thing, built entirely on the illusion of Marcus’s power and affection.

The illusion shattered when the prosecution offered her attorney a plea deal. In exchange for cooperation, they revealed the evidence they had gathered during the preliminary financial investigation into Marcus’s corporate assets.

Vanessa’s attorney sat her down in a stark interrogation room and slid a stack of printed emails across the metal table.

"What is this?" Vanessa asked, her manicured hands trembling slightly.

"Read them," her lawyer instructed bluntly.

Vanessa read through the private communications between Marcus and his lead counsel, Gregory Sloan.

In the emails, Marcus explicitly outlined a strategy to completely distance himself from Vanessa if the criminal charges advanced. He described her as an "unstable, obsessive employee" who had profoundly misunderstood the professional nature of their relationship.

Worse, the emails revealed that the luxury apartment Marcus had supposedly rented for her was actually registered to a shell company he intended to liquidate, leaving her with the debt.

"He never planned to finalize his divorce and marry you, Vanessa," her attorney said softly. "He was using you as a distraction, and now he is preparing to throw you under the bus to save his own reputation."

Vanessa stared at the emails, the blood draining from her face. She had believed she was his equal, his chosen partner. She had assaulted a pregnant woman because Marcus had convinced her I was the villain keeping them apart.

She realized, with sickening clarity, that she was just another disposable asset to him.

"What do they want to know?" Vanessa asked, her voice cold and hollow.

"Everything," the prosecutor said, stepping into the room. "The hidden accounts, the coercion tactics, and exactly what he instructed you to do in that courtroom."

Vanessa looked at the emails one last time, her loyalty completely evaporating, replaced by a bitter, vengeful survival instinct.

"Turn on the recorder," she said.
