Chapter 36 - A Message from Vanessa

|
The email arrived in my secure, professional inbox late on a Friday afternoon.
It had been years since I had heard the name Vanessa Reed. After her brief, impactful letter of apology following Marcus's conviction, she had vanished entirely from my radar, exactly as she promised.
The subject line simply read: An Update, with Gratitude.
I hesitated for a moment before clicking it open, half-expecting a resurgence of the old anxiety. But my heart remained completely calm.
Nora,
I am breaking my promise not to contact you, but I hope you will understand why. I recently saw the news coverage of your federal lobbying efforts regarding financial coercion.
I wanted you to know that your work is reaching people you will never meet. After the trial, I was completely broken. I had allowed myself to be molded into a weapon by a monster, and I despised the woman I had become.
But reading about your clinic, and seeing how you rebuilt your life without bitterness, forced me to confront my own demons. I returned to school. I am now working as a licensed clinical social worker at a women’s shelter in Seattle. I use my own shameful past to help young women recognize the warning signs of narcissistic manipulation before they get trapped.
You told me once that you hoped I would never need another woman to become smaller for me to feel valuable. I finally learned how to take up my own space.
Thank you for your fury, and thank you for your grace.
Vanessa.
I read the email twice, a profound sense of awe washing over me.

The ripple effect of our survival was truly staggering. Marcus had attempted to destroy both of us in different ways. Instead, his cruelty had inadvertently forged two advocates who were actively dismantling his legacy across the country.
I didn't reply to the email, but I saved it in a special folder on my desktop. It was the ultimate, irrefutable proof that the cycle of abuse could be permanently broken.
