Chapter 24 - The Boundary Line

|

The supervised visitation center was a sterile, aggressively neutral environment. It smelled faintly of industrial cleaner and cheap coffee.

Owen was now fourteen, tall and broad-shouldered, carrying himself with a quiet, observant intelligence that mirrored my father’s. I sat in the waiting room, reading a brief, while Owen was in the designated visitation room with Marcus and the court-appointed monitor.

Normally, the visits were tense but uneventful. Today, however, the heavy wooden door to the visitation room opened abruptly, twenty minutes early.

Owen walked out, his jaw clenched, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, controlled anger. The social worker followed closely behind him, looking slightly flustered.

I stood up immediately, my protective instincts flaring. "Owen? What happened?"

Marcus appeared in the doorway, his face red. "I was just trying to give my son some fatherly advice! You can't just walk out when I'm speaking to you!"

Owen stopped in the middle of the waiting room and slowly turned to face his father.

"You weren't giving me advice," Owen said, his voice dropping into a low, firm register that commanded the room. "You were trying to manipulate me into asking Mom to drop the supervision requirement for these visits. You told me I was 'old enough to make my own choices' and that Mom was just being vindictive."

Marcus attempted his classic, charming smile, but it looked desperate. "Owen, you know how emotional your mother gets. I just want us to have a normal relationship."

"My mother is not emotional. She is fiercely protective," Owen countered, stepping forward, entirely unfazed by the man who used to terrify our entire household. "And I am making my own choice right now. You crossed a boundary. You tried to use me to get to her. I told you last time that if you spoke disrespectfully about her, the visit was over."

"You're acting just like your grandfather," Marcus sneered, unable to hide his contempt.

"Thank you," Owen replied smoothly. "That is the best compliment you could ever give me."

Owen turned to the social worker. "Please log that the visit was terminated due to a violation of the communication guidelines. I am ready to go home now."

I didn't say a single word to Marcus. I didn't need to. I simply placed my hand proudly on my son's back and walked out of the building with him, leaving Marcus standing alone in the sterile hallway, entirely powerless against the young man he could no longer control.
