Chapter 2 - The Silent Judge

|

Chaos erupted in the courtroom.

Dana lunged forward, catching me by the shoulders before I could slide completely out of the chair. "Nora! Nora, are you okay?"

The bailiff, a large man in uniform, immediately grabbed Vanessa by the arms and hauled her back, creating space between us.

"Let go of me!" Vanessa shrieked, struggling against his grip. "She stepped into my path!"

I looked across the aisle, my vision blurring slightly from the pain.

Marcus was standing now, but he hadn't moved a single inch toward me. He didn't look at my stomach. He didn't ask if I was hurt.

He looked directly at the bailiff.

"She tripped," Marcus said, his voice calm, projecting reason over the chaos.

Dana whipped her head around, her eyes blazing. "Are you out of your mind? She shoved a pregnant woman!"

"She tripped," Marcus repeated, louder this time, turning his gaze to the judge. "She has been emotionally unstable all morning. Please, do not overreact. This is just another dramatic display."

As I gripped the edge of the table, struggling to breathe through the tightening in my stomach, my eyes darted to the side door of the courtroom.

A man stood there, motionless.

He wasn't wearing a judicial robe, just a simple grey suit, but his presence commanded the room. He held a stack of files in his hand.

It was my father.

Judge Elias Bennett.

He had recused himself from this case hours earlier upon recognizing my name on the docket, a name I hadn't used in his presence for seven years. He had returned to the courtroom to retrieve files from his chambers, stepping into the room precisely as Vanessa launched her attack.

He stood outside the official proceedings, legally unable to intervene, but physically unable to look away.

His face did not register the immediate, explosive rage I expected. Instead, I saw a profound, devastating horror. He looked at me, then at Marcus.

Marcus caught the direction of my gaze. He looked at the older man by the door and offered a confident, dismissive smirk.

He mouthed the words clearly across the room.

May you like

"You're dead."

Marcus thought my father’s recusal meant I was entirely unprotected. He thought the judge standing by the door was just another powerless observer. He had no idea that the silent man watching him lie was the very father I hadn't spoken to in nearly a decade.
