Chapter 10 - The Hearing Resumes

|

Three weeks after the incident, the emergency custody and asset hearing resumed.

The atmosphere in Judge Cole’s courtroom was fundamentally different. The press gallery was packed, but the room itself was deathly silent.

Marcus sat at his table, looking significantly less composed. His bespoke suit seemed slightly too large for him, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He had lost control of the public narrative, and he knew it.

I sat next to Dana, feeling the baby kick strongly against my ribs. I placed a hand over my stomach, drawing strength from the movement.

Judge Cole took the bench, her expression unreadable.

"We are here to resume the emergency motions regarding temporary custody and the preservation of marital assets," Judge Cole announced, opening her file. "Mr. Sloan, does your client still maintain his request for primary custody based on the psychological evaluation previously submitted?"

Gregory Sloan stood up, looking incredibly uncomfortable. "Your Honor, we..."

"Before you answer, Mr. Sloan," Dana interrupted, standing up smoothly, "the Petitioner would like to submit Exhibit C into evidence. It is the complete, unedited clinical notes from Dr. Aris, obtained via subpoena."

Sloan’s face turned a pale, sickly shade of grey.

Judge Cole reviewed the documents handed to her by the clerk. She read the omitted sentence silently, her lips pressing into a thin, furious line.

"Mr. Sloan," Judge Cole said, her voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet register. "Care to explain why a critical diagnostic recommendation regarding domestic coercion was deliberately omitted from the report your firm filed with this court?"

"Your Honor, we relied on the summary provided by the clinic," Sloan stammered, attempting to deflect blame.

"Do not lie to me in my courtroom, counselor," Judge Cole warned sharply. "I am referring this matter to the state bar association for immediate review. As for the custody motion..."

She turned her gaze directly onto Marcus.

"Mr. Hale, your documented conduct in this courtroom, combined with the evidence of financial and emotional coercion, renders you unfit for primary custody. I am granting the Petitioner temporary sole decision-making authority."

Marcus stood up abruptly, his chair scraping loudly.

"This is a witch hunt!" Marcus shouted, his carefully crafted facade finally breaking completely. "This is happening because her father works in this building! He pulled strings to get this ruling!"

Judge Cole did not flinch. She simply looked at him with profound disgust.

"Judge Bennett recused himself immediately, filed all necessary disclosures, and has had absolutely zero communication with this court regarding the merits of this case," Judge Cole stated firmly.

"She has resources I don't!" Marcus argued, pointing a shaking finger at me.

"You employ four attorneys, Mr. Hale," Judge Cole replied dryly, gesturing to his crowded legal table. "Financial resources do not determine the outcome in this court. Your documented, abusive conduct does. You will be allowed professionally supervised visits only after completing a mandatory psychological assessment and an anger management program."

Marcus collapsed back into his chair, utterly defeated. The money, the influence, the lies—none of it had worked.
