Chapter 37 - The Engagement

|

Owen invited David and me to dinner at a nice restaurant downtown. He was twenty-five now, in his final year of law school, and possessed a grounded, quiet confidence that continually amazed me.

He had been dating a brilliant, fiercely independent medical student named Maya for three years. She was kind, challenging, and completely unbothered by the lingering whispers of the Hale family scandals.

We sat at the table, enjoying a bottle of wine, when Owen cleared his throat and reached into his jacket pocket.

"Mom. David," Owen began, a nervous, radiant smile breaking across his face. "I wanted you guys to be the first to know."

He placed a small, velvet jewelry box on the table and opened it. Inside was a stunning, vintage engagement ring.

I gasped, covering my mouth with both hands as tears instantly sprang to my eyes. "Owen! Oh my god, it's beautiful. Did you ask her yet?"

"I'm asking her tomorrow, down by the lake," Owen beamed, looking at the ring. "But I wanted to show you first."

David reached across the table and clapped Owen on the shoulder. "Congratulations, Owen. She is an extraordinary woman. You are a very lucky man."

"I know I am," Owen said softly. He looked directly at me, his dark eyes shining with intense emotion.

"I wanted to thank you, Mom," Owen said, his voice dropping into a serious, heartfelt register. "I spent my whole life watching how David treats you. Watching how you demand respect, and how you two operate as a real, equal team."

He picked up the ring box, closing it carefully.

"I know what a healthy marriage looks like because I watched you build one," Owen told me, reaching out to squeeze my hand. "You broke the cycle, Mom. You made sure I knew how to love someone properly."

The tears finally fell, hot and fast, down my cheeks. I had spent so many years terrified that Marcus's toxic legacy would somehow poison my son's ability to love.

But looking at the remarkable man sitting across from me, I knew with absolute, unshakeable certainty that the poison had been completely eradicated.
