Chapter 23 - A Glimpse of the Past

|

As the Director of Survivor Advocacy, my role occasionally required me to attend philanthropic events to secure ongoing private donations for the clinic. I generally avoided the high-society galas that Marcus used to dominate, but some overlap was inevitable.

It was a crisp autumn evening, and I was attending a silent auction at the city's modern art museum. I wore a simple, elegant navy dress, my hair pulled back, feeling completely comfortable in my own skin.

I was standing near a modern sculpture, sipping sparkling water, when I heard a sharp intake of breath.

"Nora? Nora Hale?"

I turned around. Standing a few feet away was Cynthia Sterling, a woman who had been a prominent fixture in Marcus's inner social circle. She was draped in expensive diamonds, her face pulled tight with surprise.

"It's Nora Bennett now, Cynthia," I corrected her politely, my voice steady. "It has been a long time."

Cynthia stepped closer, looking me up and down as if searching for visible scars. "We were all so shocked, you know. When Marcus went to prison. The trial was just... scandalous. Some people thought you were terribly harsh to testify against him."

Ten years ago, a comment like that from Cynthia would have sent me spiraling into an anxious, panicked need to explain and defend myself. I would have desperately tried to convince her of my innocence.

Tonight, I just felt a profound, overwhelming sense of pity for her.

"Accountability often looks harsh to those who are accustomed to privilege," I replied smoothly, taking a sip of my water.

Cynthia bristled, offended by my lack of submission. "Well, he was a very powerful man. And you basically disappeared. How have you been surviving?"

"I am not just surviving, Cynthia. I am thriving," I smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that she clearly did not know how to process. "I direct a legal advocacy clinic that helps women escape financial abuse. In fact, if you or any of your friends ever find yourselves in a situation where your husband controls your bank accounts and isolates you from your family, please don't hesitate to call my office. We keep everything strictly confidential."

The color drained entirely from Cynthia's face. The subtle, pointed implication hit its mark flawlessly. She clutched her expensive evening bag, muttered a hasty, incoherent excuse, and practically ran in the opposite direction.

I turned back to the modern sculpture, my heart rate completely normal, feeling the absolute, unshakeable power of my own voice.
